Opti Racing

Development Team
This program is for sailors who have demonstrated a keen interest in racing and who have attained White Sail Level III or equivalent. Sailors must have strong boat handling skills and be eager to compete. Racing knowledge will cover wind strategy, race tactics and boat and sail tuning. Most course time will be spent on the water perfecting boat handling skills and gaining confidence in competitive situations. All sailors in this program are expected to participate in fleet race nights. Throughout July, the team will attend 2 regattas. Team members are encouraged to participate in other regattas in August. Racing Optis that are provided are in top racing condition.

Advanced Optimist Racing Team

A lot of Olympic sailors started racing in an Optimist! This is a comprehensive program for Opti racers who would like to race for the entire summer. The team will attend 3 regattas with a coach including the RHYC Fogh Boorman. Racers must provide their own boat. If a racing Opti is required, an additional fee will apply.

Message from the Coach
Hey Team!  It's your coach, Mark.  I just want to give you a brief personal background.  My sailing experience started very similarly to most of yours.  I began in the optimist and progressed to race Laser >>, 420's and 29ers at very competitive levels.  I am most proud of finishing third in the Canadian Youth Champs as well as winning Four Sisters.  I have coached a variety of levels with the RHYC and love the school here in Hamilton.  It is a great place to hone skills and develop long lasting friendships.  I have also sailed abroad and had a chance to coach a summer in the Caribbean.  This all started in the optimist, which is a very competitive fleet and I hope you are all excited for this summer.  The opportunities are endless and I hope all you sailors aim high with your goals because you have the potential to be the next generation representing our club at renowned competitions.

Safety First, then Teamwork.

All the best this season!

In September I will be doing graduate work in Criminology.  Yes, like CSI!!
